Haiti - ScoutHelp

Scout Groups were first formed in Haiti in 1916 which turned into an association in 1926. Finally in 1932, this association became a member of the "World Organization of the Scout Movement". The memebership was unfotuntely canceled in 1939 but finally in 1940 Scouts d'Haïti was formed and was recognized by WOSM making them full memebers of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

Program

Haiti Scouts follow all the traditional Scouting activities and programs but as they are a developing country they also work on:

  • Helping to fight illiteracy
  • Reforestation
  • Environmental Protection
  • Running Evening-Schools for old and young
  • International Exchanges
  • Services to the Community
  • AIDS prevention

Age groups

Like UK and US acounts Haiti scouts have age groups these are:

  • Lovetaux - Cub Scouts (ages 8 to 11)
  • Scouts (ages 11 to 17)
  • Rovers or Routiers (ages 17 to 22)

Earthquake 2010

In Geneva on January 12th 2010 a violent earthquake struck Haiti, More on the Earthquake, the World Scout movement instantely began to mobailise around 30,000 Scouts to come to the aid of the stricken population. In the name of World Scouting, a message of solidarity and compassion, was sent to Haitian Scouts, even though it is very difficult to get into contact with them for the moment. A volunteer cooperation specialist from “Scouts et Guides de France” (Scouts and Guides of France) is on site in Port-aux-Princes, to support the coordination of the international Scout aid.
