ICT - LAN Party - ScoutHelp

Getting Started

A LAN party is a temporary, sometimes spontaneous, gathering of people together with their computers, which they network together primarily for the purpose of playing multi-player computer games. These local area networks (LANs) come in various sizes, from very small (two people) to very large (more than 6,500 people). Small parties can form spontaneously, but large ones usually require a fair amount of planning and preparation on the part of the organizer. ( Sourced from [1] )

Why Hold a LAN Party?

A LAN party is a great evening for Explorer Scouts they bring along all the equipment and hopefully the knowledge (you will need to check) to fun the evening. They will then play together other a network and have fun they will talk and chat to each other about tactics. It can be a team building event as well as a fun evening.

You could set challenges in each of the games they have to complete whether it be the most kills or the fastest around the race court.

Who will it interest?

This event is mainly for explorer scouts who have a passion about ICT, which ok is most, you will find a few have everything they need to get started and some just come along in hope they can play.

If you can find a explorer or more maybe a adult leader which networking knowledge it would help as it will be needed to keep the network running smoothly.

How successful could it be?

When I have run them before we have had about 60% turn up of people who want to play ok not all the machines worked but the ones that did were in consent use the others were happy listening to music or kicking a ball around outside until a PC came free.

What do I need to know?

  • That someone will be there with technical knowledge
  • That the software is legal, there are plenty of FREE network games, google it :)
  • That you have all the equipment
  • People are going to be interested
