ScoutHelp recommends this badge for Beavers and Cubs,
Equipment Needed
There is certain ICT equipment that will be needed to run a successful ICT badge evening. This is:
- Laptops or PCs (Enough so there are groups of no more than 5/6)
- If laptops external mice
- ICT Literate instructors (1 per group)
- Badge Requirement print outs for all the instructors and scouters.
- Enough power in the hut to safely power the machines
How to run the evening
Start off by splitting up into groups of about 4/5 around a machine.
Once everyone has settled down and got over the can I touch it stage in the group discuss:
- How to switch on and close down a computer safely (Using the correct method for shutdown not just pull the plug (start turn off my computer))
- What is the:
- Monitor
- Mouse
- Printer
- CD-ROM
- Icon
Once they all understand what the above are, get them to draw between two lines like on the image attached (This counts towards "Use a piece of painting software of their choice to produce a simple picture." and demonstrates use of the mouse and control)
Once they have drawn around the inside of the lines make them sign the bottom using the text tool.
Paint is the best program for this.
To demonstrate they can "Show they can use a piece of software that requires the use of a CD-ROM" put the original image onto a CD and get them to open it from the CD.
Home work
To prove that they understand the badge we recommend these parts of the badge as homework, although they can be done on the evening.
- Use a piece of software of their choice to show that they can produce a poster to show others what they do in Scouting. It should include both text and graphics.
This can be as simple as getting them to produce a poster on scouting using word.
