Equipment Needed

There is certain ICT equipment that will be needed to run a successful ICT badge evening. This is:

• Laptops or PCs (Enough so there are groups of no more than 5/6)
• If laptops external mice
• ICT Literate instructors (1 per group)
• Badge Requirement print outs for all the instructors and scouters.
• Enough power in the hut to safely power the machines
• Group leaders with email addresses

How to run the evening

Start off by splitting up into groups of about 4/5 around a machine.

Once everyone has settled down and got over the can I touch it stage in the group discuss:

1. Discuss the history of the Internet and how it works and get suggestions about how they think it may be used in the future.
2. Then discuss the advantages of using IT compared to manual systems in two of the following:
   1. Letter writing
   2. Graphic art, design or drawing
   3. Accounts
   4. Library records
   5. Newspaper layout
   6. Passing messages
   7. News and weather
   8. Information
   9. Travel and holiday bookings.
3. Then in a group discuss what a computer virus is, the possible effects and how they can be prevented.

The next step is to demonstrate that they can use email. To do this we recommend...

1. Getting them to Send an email to the group leader with their Homework
2. The group leader then replying to them giving one or more things to change
3. They then make the change and reply to the email.

Home work

To prove that they understand the badge we recommend these parts of the badge as homework, although they can be done on the evening.

1. Use a piece of presentation software (e.g. PowerPoint) to give a presentation to an audience. In which contains a map showing local facilities and places of interest.
2. They then need to produce a spreadsheet to record subscriptions and expenses for a camp or Devise a simple database that could be used by their Section for a particular purpose, e.g. camp records, general records.
