Equipment Needed

There is certain ICT equipment that will be needed to run a successful ICT badge evening. This is:

  • Laptops or PCs (Enough so there are groups of no more than 5/6)
  • If laptops external mice
  • ICT Literate instructors (1 per group)
  • Badge Requirement print outs for all the instructors and scouters.
  • Enough power in the hut to safely power the machines

How to run the evening

Start off by splitting up into groups of about 4/5 around a machine.

Once everyone has settled down and got over the can I touch it stage in the group discuss:

  1. The laws which concern the copying of software, access to computer systems and storage of personal information.
  2. How an IT system is used by a major user, e.g. a supermarket chain or a bank.
  3. Discuss the following terminology.
    1. Macros
    2. Web Publishing
    3. Video Conferencing
    4. Multi-tasking
    5. Drag and Drop

Show how that they have used IT in their daily life over a period of six months, e.g. email, weather forecasts etc. This can be done by talking about how they use IT in there day to day lives.

Home work

To prove that they understand the badge we recommend these parts of the badge as homework, although they can be done on the evening.

  1. Create a simple website for their Section. (web-space can be provided by ScoutHelp ([1]) or escouts.org.uk)
  2. Evaluate a range of professional websites.
  3. Produce a range of information literature on an agreed theme, e.g. 'how to be more environmentally friendly' - leaflets, posters, fliers etc.
